George Sylvester Nichols - Colonel |
Born January 12, 1820 in Athens, Greene County, NY. A member of the New york State Militia he was promoted Brigadier General, 37th Infantry Brigade by Governor Silas Wright in 1845.
G.S. Nichols raised a company of Volunteer cavalry from Greene County NY and enlisted November 19, 1861. From October 31, 1862 to April 19, 1863 he served as Major, then Lt Colonel to February 29, 1864 when promoted to Colonel. Took command of the regiment in June 1864 after its commander, Col Sackett died of wounds received at Trevilian Station. In March of 1865 he was breveted Brigadier General for gallantry in service upon the recommendation of Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan.
The general died on May 29, 1916 at the age of 96.

He fought in the battles of the Wilderness, Yellow Tavern, Meadow Bridge, Cold Harbor, Gerdensville, Five Forks, and Appomattox. He was wounded in the battle of Cold Harbor in the left thigh and the ball was never removed. He was part of the guard that escorted Gen Lee to Gen Grant when Lee surrendered. he was discharged at the close of the war at Clouds Mills, VA July 17, 1865.
